This SX application is part of a model railway control. The existing application requires to control 520 independent traction current sections by PWM, 220 switches, 280 light signals and 470 track occupation circuits.

The interlocking is realized by a conventional PC, but of course it is not possible for this PC to handle the above mentioned elements within a sufficient cycle time.

Therefore a modular subsystem using a SX28 was developed. This SX application - called BUSMASTER - communicates with the interlocking PC via a RS485 field bus protocol (115kBit/s). The interfaces to the "field elements" are realized by shift registers which are controlled by the SX28. Even the PWM (pulse width modulation) signal for the current sections is addressed via shift register! Since one BUSMASTER can handle up to 60 PWMs the high speed of the SX28 was a basic condition to fulfill the system requirements.

One BUSMASTER can handle 60 traction current sections, 160 signal lamps, 32 switches and 96 track occupation circuits. The overall system can be expanded up to 63 BUSMASTERs. The existing application uses 9 devices.
