Talking Shop with Local Manufacturers

I was fortunate to represent Parallax recently at the 2013 Manufacturer’s Forum presented by the Placer County Office for Economic Development. The goal of the forum was to present programs and initiatives that are expanding opportunities for manufacturers, like us, in and around Placer County.

I participated as a guest panelist in the discussion on the Metropolitan Export Initiative led by the Capital City Region of the Northern California World Trade Center. The other panelists and myself discussed our experiences in exporting, when did we enter the global marketplace, how do we reach our global customers, and some of our challenges. We were also asked to comment on what kinds of services and strategies would help the Sacramento Region better connect to the global customer?

For my part I shared that Parallax entered the global marketplace 22 years ago and have grown to serve over 40 countries with the help of our 100+ distributors. We reach our global customers through our website, social media, ads and articles in industry magazines, sponsorship and events. Some of the manufacturing challenges we face in the global marketplace are due to language barriers, delays due to miscommunication, shipping, and different time zones. We are also challenged by the high cost of shipping our products outside of the U.S.

When asked what services and strategies would be helpful to manufacturers like us in our area, I mentioned increasing awareness of what resources are available locally. This event provided a great opportunity to find out what other manufacturing companies are near us, to connect and support each other. We recently celebrated Manufacturing (MFG) Day at Parallax in early October. Next year, I hope that rather than celebrating as individual companies on MFG day, we can celebrate with other local manufacturing companies, to showcase our operations, to network with suppliers, and try to solve problems common among us as a community.

A big thank you to all those that put on the Placer Manufacturing Panel.  It was a great opportunity and I’m so glad I got to be a part of it.
