Purpose: The Spinneret Web Server design contest aims to promote the emerging open-source hardware community by encouraging the use of good open-source design practices, cooperation, and proactive sharing of new designs.
The Competition: Design a project using the Spinneret Web Server that performs a useful function and demonstrates your technical abilities. During the design process cooperate with others on the Spinneret Web Server forum and work together to develop designs and code common between projects.

Important Contest Information

Eligibility: Applicants should be at least 18 years old. If you are 18 or under you will need to have your legal guardian fill out this consent form. Please note that if you wish to participate in this contest you need to take responsibility for your own involvement. This contest is open to Domestic and International applicants.
Parallax Inc. and WIZnet reserve the right to pull any application at any time for any reason. Employees of Parallax Inc. and WIZnet are not eligible to enter the contest. International applicants are encouraged to submit their projects. Parallax Inc. and WIZnet disclaim any responsibility associated with your country's rules or conditions pertaining to entering contests, should they apply. If you are an honorable mention winner in the contest and choose to receive Parallax Inc. product as your prize, you will be responsible for shipping charges and import taxes should they apply.

Cost: The contest has NO entry fee.

Prizes: Winners will be notified by August 26, 2011. Projects will be posted on the Parallax Inc. website by September 1, 2011. United States winners will receive a 1099 income tax form to report their winnings (if cash). Parallax will determine the number of honorable mention winners when entries are judged.

How to Participate:
- Start a thread on the official Parallax Spinneret Web Server forum stating that you are entering the design contest
- Include a brief description of your project in the post
- Send an email to SpinneretContest@parallax.com including your name, address, phone number, e-mail contact information, your forums user name, and a link to the forum thread.
- Include a statement in the email that you agree to completely abide by the Spinneret Web Server Contest Project Submittal Rules.
The issuance of a Project Number represents a commitment on your behalf to submit a project in the contest. Project Numbers will be issued until June 30, 2011 at which time we will consider the contest closed to new entries.

Judges and Scoring
|
|
Judges: The following judges will assess the submittals:
- David Carrier, Engineer at Parallax
- Kevin Cook, Tech Support at Parallax
- Daniel Harris, Electronics Engineer at Parallax
- Lauren Davis, Marketing Manager at Parallax
Judging Criteria: Projects will be judged according to the following factors:
- 30% community participation: Entrants are expected to help others and contribute code on the forums or Object Exchange and use community resources. The final code should have been created by building on community code by adding unique capabilities.
- 25% capabilities & design appropriateness: Code should demonstrate the capabilities of the Propeller and the W5100. External hardware should build upon the capabilities of the Spinneret Web Server.
- 25% usefulness: The entry should perform real-world tasks and be useful to others. Final result should be a viable cost-effective use of the Spinneret Web Server.
- 20% professionalism: Submittals should be typed, organized and spell checked. Pictures and video must be in focus. The project report should be clear and well written.

After Registering for the Contest
|

Communications: When you register you will receive a project number and establish contact with us via e-mail SpinneretContest@parallax.com. We encourage you to post all questions in our Support Forum (information below).
Spinneret Web Server Forum - Parallax is operating a special discussion forum for contest entrants at http://forums.parallax.com under “Spinneret Web Server.” We encourage entrants to help each other.
Submission Guidelines: All project submittals must be submitted on the official Parallax Spinneret Web Server forum by June 30, 2011 at 11:59pm PACIFIC STANDARD TIME. No hard copies will be accepted, and no late posts will be considered without prior approval. All submitted files must be released under either the MIT License, as can be viewed at Parallax Object Exchange, the Creative Commons Attribution Only 3.0 License, as can be viewed at creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0, or equivalent.
Specifically, this is what we require for submitting a project:
- final submission: Create one or more posts in the forum thread for your project containing a schematic, a block diagram (if applicable), source code, a bill of materials, pictures, videos, (if applicable) and a project report. All files should be viewable with freely available tools, preferably open source. If there is any doubt, include a PDF copy of the file. Include links to other posts that you have participated in. All documentation must be provided in clear English language.
- project report: Create a report explaining the capabilities of your final project, demonstrating how well it meets judging criteria.
- source code: Well-formatted and documented code is required so the judges may develop a reasonable understanding of the functionality.
- pictures: Post at least three photographs of your project including the electronics and the project in use. Post at least one photograph of the project designer holding the project. Provide the photos in high-resolution.
- videos: If possible, provide videos of the project in action. The video may be posted as an attachment or hosted by a 3rd party video sharing site.
The judges may request the submittal of the physical project you designed. Judges may also request clarification of specific project details, and provide ongoing feedback within the forums. Parallax employees, including judges, may, at their discretion, provide assistance through forums posts.

Legal Considerations: All submitted files must be released under either the MIT License, as can be viewed at Parallax Object Exchange, the Creative Commons Attribution Only 3.0 License, as can be viewed at creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0, or equivalent. All applicants grant Parallax Inc. and WIZnet non-exclusive web and print publication rights, whether they are selected as a winner or non-winning entrant. Parallax Inc. and WIZnet will post all contest projects in entirety on our web sites. Selected applications may also be published in print advertising, images, or in our catalogs or books. By entering, applicants agree to release and hold harmless Parallax Inc., WIZnet, and any associates from any and all liability.
