Boat Noise Gun
Submitted by Clark Radcliffe of Michigan State University:
Developed by Michigan State University’s Dr. Clark Radcliffe and research team, the Boat Noise Gun is used to measure the noise emitted by operating boats for law enforcement.
The device compensates for distance to the boat's path and background noise from other sources. The MSU Noise Gun has three major interconnected components: a microphone, a laser rangefinder and a microcontroller-based electronics system. The electronics system includes a microphone amplifier, acoustic “A” weighting filter and a BASIC Stamp 2 microcontroller. The BASIC Stamp measures sound level and receives distances from the rangefinder, while compensating the measured noise level for distance between the operator and the boat's course. The Boat Noise Gun displays a value for the minimum possible noise level that would have been measured had the boat been driven though a 25 meter course used by an international standard method for boat noise measurement.
