|This is the first prototype of our hybrid robot. This robot started as a proof of concept to prove to myself that the engine and alternator could be coupled to produce manageable amounts of power. Once the generator was complete, it grew some wheels and became a robot chassis. This one went really fast with 10” tires so I kept it under radio control for most of its testing. Weighing almost 70 pounds, there was plenty of opportunity to cause damage in the neighborhood.
||This is the second prototype, which is featured in the ROBOT magazine article. This robot solved many problems present in the first design. It has a lower center of gravity, no clutch (a direct engine/alternator connection) and better placement of key components like the battery, motors and engine. I also added 50W halogen lights and made custom wheels of a smaller 7” diameter. This reduced the speed substantially, making the whole system safer.
