Our primary experience lies with the FT232BM, FT245BM, and the new FT232R as we use them in our own designs (USB Board of Education, USB Oscilloscope, etc.), though all parts operate in a similar capacity and have well-documented datasheets. As an FTDI United States distributor and customer for our own products, Parallax is pleased to announce the new FT232R USB to serial bridge. Parallax stocks significant quantities of this chip and we're ready to sell them and use them on our own products! |
The new FT232R provides many benefits over other FTDI chips, such as the FT232BM:
- Key FTDI circuit components are now internal (EEPROM, configurable clock which may be used to drive a microcontroller, and some new internal passive components)
- FTDI "ID" feature provides unique internal chip ID number
- Reduced parts count means less PCB real estate and reduced Bill of Materials parts and cost, possibly saving 50% on the cost of implementing an entire USB to serial bridge; and
- Two FT232R package styles: 28-pin SSOP (FT232RL) and 32-pin QFN (FT232RQ)
